Getting Things Done Quickly With TextPad

I love TextPad. It may not be the best, most awesome text editor out there, but I know how to get it to do what I want to do.

How To: Duplicate a “Column” of Data

I have:

Box Seats
Seating Section A
Seating Section B
I'll Decide Later

I want:

Box Seats	Box Seats
Seating Section A	Seating Section A
Seating Section B	Seating Section B
I'll Decide Later	I'll Decide Later

Open up MS Excell. Copy your column into Excel. Duplicate that column. Paste back into Textpad.

How To: “Insert” Data

I have:

Box Seats	Box Seats
Seating Section A	Seating Section A
Seating Section B	Seating Section B
I'll Decide Later	I'll Decide Later

I want:

<asp:ListItem Text="Box Seats" Value="Box Seats" />
<asp:ListItem Text="Seating Section A" Value="Seating Section A" />
<asp:ListItem Text="Seating Section B" Value="Seating Section B" />
<asp:ListItem Text="I'll Decide Later" Value="I'll Decide Later" />

We can do this very quickly with 3 Find/Replaces.
Check the ‘Regular Expression’ box.

Find \n Replace: \n<asp:ListItem Text=”
Find \t Replace: ” Value=”
Find \n Replace: ” />\n

How To: Open A Bunch Of Files Fast

When you drag a folder onto TextPad, it doesn’t know what to do with it.
Here’s a little trick.

Do Search > Find In Files

TextPad's Search Box

Find what:
In Files:
In Folder: (desired root folder)

You probably want to search all folders in that folder (ie, recursive search), so check the ‘Search Subfolders’ option.

If you want to open all files in all the folders, enter * for What and * for Files. If you want to open all files of a particular type, say TXT or INI files, do * for What and *.TXT, *.INI for Files. If you want all files with a search term (or regex), enter that for the What.

Press Find. You’ll get a GREP looking result. Right click somewhere. Do ‘Open All’.

Productivity Tips: Print to PDF

Printing to PDF is an awesome productivity enhancer that I think all computer users should be aware of. My favorite is CutePDF so I will talk about that one but several similar utilities exist.

CutePDF is a free utility that lets you ‘print’/convert ANYTHING to PDF. If you can print it, you can turn it into a PDF.  This is an excellent alternative to anything Adobe Reader. It has some other great uses as well, such as storing offline (or archiving) webpages, saving digital reciepts and bills, and sending/uploading documents to websites or through emails.

When something is in PDF, it has a hidden connotation “don’t edit me!”. PDF is a standard document format nowadays, so if in doubt if recipients have MS Word/Open Office/whatever, PDF is the way to go.
